Memories, as much as the forgetfulness which pursues them, structure identity. Parks, ruins, monuments and museums are mnemonic devices annexing personhood with an idea of place. The city is a despotic index, whose architectural vernacular (bridges, tunnels, subways, roads to the sea) silently enacts its inhabitants into historical narratives. Spaces private and public can be engineered to reconcile the person with their situation, but this activity often sacrifices the ability to see either very clearly. The question for the artist would not sound strange posed to the urban planner, statesman and neuroscientist: how does one begin to interrogate this moment where the person ends and his situation begins?
DISSOCIATIVE EXPERIENCES SCALES is a series of attempts at approaching this question, deployed in the forms of performance, video and sculpture. Every evening a different artist or group of artists presents a single work that surveys the dissociative instance between the individual and its vital continuities, be it spatial, temporal, corporal, or communal. The exhibit is inaugurated with a procession from Piraeus to the project space and culminates in a collaborative performance developed in a workshop parallel to the exhibit, led by the composer Jonathan Bepler.
DISSOCIATIVE EXPERIENCES SCALES was developed by the participating artists over a series of trips back and forth between Germany and Greece in 2015 and 2016. After a concerted reading of a novel whose protagonist suffers from dissociation, there were a handful of related explorations, both physical and philosophical, of Athens, Delphi and surrounding areas. Taking these experiences as a point of departure, individual projects were developed in both close proximity to one another and constant dialogue with the concept of their exhibition. The resulting exhibit, serial and modular and constantly in a state of negotiation, attempts to forge an identity out of its own dialectic of anamnesis and amnesia.
Die Ausstellung wird unterstützt im Fonds Hochschuldialog mit Südeuropa 2016 des DAAD.
