Vortrag und Workshop in englischer Sprache

In seinem Vortrag erhellt John Jesurun den gesellschaftlich-medialen Kontext der New Yorker Kunst- bzw. Kulturszene der 70er und 80er Jahre, die seine Arbeit im Theater, im Fernsehen und in der bildenden Kunst geprägt hat. Als einer der wichtigsten Protagonisten des postdramatischen Theaters, etablierte Jesurun eine experimentelle künstlerische Praxis, die an der Schnittstelle zwischen darstellender Kunst, Text, Medien und Architektur angesiedelt ist. Der Vortrag ist ein Rückblick auf die Entstehung diverser Kunstprojekte wie „Chang in a void moon“, deren Ursprung in der Verbindung medialer-, verbaler- und visueller Räume ist.

John Jesurun studierte Bildhauerei an der Yale University und arbeitete als Regieassistent bei der Dick Cavett Talksshow (1979-1982). Seit 1982 entwickelte er Text, Regie und Ausstattung von mehr als 30 Stücken, darunter „Chang in a void moon“ (61 Episoden), die Medientrilogie „Deep sleep / White water / Black Maria“, „Everything that rises must converge“ und „Snow“. Er war Fellow zahlreicher Stiftungen, darunter MacArthur, Rockefeller, Guggenheim und die Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Seine Arbeiten wurden unter anderem bei TCG und No Passport Press („Shatterhand Massacree and other Media Texts“, sowie im Performing Arts Journal veröffentlicht. Weitere Arbeiten sind u.a. „Firefall“ (Dance Theatre Workshop, New York), das preisgekrönte Musicvideo für Jeff Buckley, „Last Goodbye“ und die Inszenierung der Oper „Delusion of the Fury“ von Harry Partch. John Jesurun unterrichtete Theaterwissenschaften an Hochschulen in Deutschland (u.a. in Gießen), den Niederlanden, den Vereinigten Staaten und in Japan. Sein “kinematografisches Theater” und multimediale Inszenierungen beeinflussten die Gießener Schule (u.a. René Pollesch) maßgeblich.

In his lecture John Jesurn reflects on the social and media context of the cultural scene in New York of the 70s and 80s, which determined his work in theatre, television and the visual arts. Being one of the leading figures of the post-dramatic theatre, John Jesurun established an artistic practice that blends performance, text, media and architecture. The lecture is a survey of his work examining a timeline of various projects like „Chang in a void moon“ which connect visual, medial and verbal spaces.  

John Jesurun received his M.F.A. in Sculpture from Yale University and from 1979 to 1982 he was assistant to the producer for The Dick Cavett Show. Since 1982 he developed text, directed and designed more than 30 pieces, among them Chang in a void moon“ (61 Episoden), die Medientrilogie „Deep sleep / White water / Black Maria“, „Everything that rises must converge“ und „Snow“. He is the recipient of numerous grants including fellowships from institutions like the MacArthur fellowship, Rockefeller Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. His work is published by Theater Communications Group, No Passport Press and Performing Arts Journal (“Shatterhand Massacree and other Media Texts”). His work also include Fireall (Dance Theatre Workshop, New York), the awarded video for Jeff Buckley´s song “Last Goodbye” and the staging of the opera “Delusion of the Fury” by Harry Partch. John Jesurun has taught performance studies on different universities in Germany (Gießen), the Netherlands, United States and Japan. His “cinematographic theatre” and multimedia performances had a great influence of the students in Gießen (René Pollesch).
