Beginning, absence/presence, fiction/reality, document, biography, political art, … So many concepts and notions that we use and deal with on a daily basis and in our artistic practice. Some belong to artistic jargon, others only in a contingent way. Some seem to belong primarily to politics. By presenting some of the Lebanese contemporary artists’ works, as materials for study and analysis that will open up critical discussions and thinking, the course proposes to deconstruct the official definitions of these notions which are shaping our world, to point out their political significance and to problematize them.
Focusing on the relationship between the personal and the common; how, by different means of appropriation and interference, to rediscover our share of responsibility in History; how, playing on identity and otherness, to make the uncanny familiar, and the familiar, uncanny. According to Walter Benjamin each moment of the past could become a citation à I’ordre du jour.
Working from this perspective to challenge it.
