Know Your Tools

summer semester 2024

supervision: Moritz Schottmüller

Participants: Ruby Richter, Laura Waterstradt, Peter Oellerich, Birke Beyer, Sarah Elena Kratzl, Jiayu Liu, Julia Heinze, Leyla Tavas, Franka Karola Breunig

The course "Know Your Tools" explored strategies and principles of graphic design and examined how graphic design can be applied in the context of exhibition design and scenography. During the course, students used computer programs to translate design concepts into tangible forms, including text layout and image treatment for various purposes such as communication, invitations, room plans, wall texts, mock-ups, and handouts.

Participants became familiar with the diverse machinery and workshops available at HfG, gaining practical skills in producing simple yet appealing printed materials. The curriculum encouraged participants to pursue their own project initiatives, which were discussed in class. Feedback was given in small groups to learn constructive critique, allowing each student to benefit from diverse perspectives and collaborative learning. Many sessions started with a warm-up exercise proposed by invited guests like Chloe Gourvenec, Calvin Kudufia, and Emma Singleton.
